Customize Arcade2TV-XR MAX to suit the games you play. This page brings together DIY modification instructions and optional control-upgrade guidance for XR MAX.

Before you begin

Toggle the power switch off and unplug the power adapter and all external cables before opening the deck or changing hardware. Keep the panel supported and avoid pulling or trapping wires. Check that the replacement part and its instructions specifically apply to XR MAX.

Change the joystick grip

You need the supplied shaft wrench and replacement grip from the underside storage compartment.

  1. Lift the washer around the shaft. Fit the wrench onto the two short flat sides at the bottom of the shaft.
  2. Hold the shaft still with the wrench. Turn only the ball grip counterclockwise to remove it.
  3. Keep holding the shaft and screw the replacement grip clockwise until secure. Directions are viewed from above.
  4. Remove the wrench, lower the washer and store the removed grip and tool. Close the compartment, reconnect MAX and test joystick movement.

Change the joystick restrictor gate

The restrictor gate guides joystick movement. Square eight-way gates are fitted; spare four-way, circular and octagonal gates are included.

  1. With MAX off and all cables disconnected, remove the two front screws and the screws on each side of the control panel. Carefully lift the panel onto the rear section with its underside facing up. Support it without pulling or trapping wires.
  2. Push all four plastic gate clips inward toward the center and lift the gate off. If you are unsure how to release the clips, contact support before proceeding.
  3. Align the replacement gate with all four clips and press down until they click securely.
  4. Lower the panel with wires clear of the edges. Align the metal brackets with the screw holes and refit the front and side screws.
  5. Reconnect MAX and test all intended joystick directions.

Optional GRS control upgrades

The XR MAX user manual lists optional rotary joysticks, flight sticks, push-and-pull spinners and automatic restrictors. These are purchased separately. Check the specific upgrade and kit contents at GRS Thunderstick Studios before ordering.

These upgrades use internal USB ports inside the deck. Use the instructions supplied for the exact upgrade; this page does not yet provide a separate installation walkthrough for every kit. Check compatibility and installation details with Xgaming before starting if your kit is not specifically identified for XR MAX.

Check your new setup

After installation, test the controls using the upgrade's instructions, then assign the inputs in your game or emulator. Your game must support the movement or action provided by the upgrade. Record your assignments on the custom layout pages in your manual.
